Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of ancient medicine used to balance the body’s inner vital energy Qi (氣, pronounced: Chi or Kee). The human body lives in an extremely complex environment nowadays. Work, school, family, living environment, friends, money; all these things affect our bodies day in and day out. Our vital energy (Qi) is being disturbed by many different factors. Once the Qi is obstructed, our bodies start to compensate over time and, if we keep ignoring them, their function will be impaired.

Acupuncture is a potent way of regulating the Qi and unblocking the energy channels (meridians). Meridians are the channel connections between inner organs and the surface of the skin. By applying acupuncture needles on certain points on the surface of the skin (known as acu-points), we can regulate the Qi flow in the body to achieve optimal health levels. This approach has been used for over 3000 years and, today, acupuncture is still one of the most used natural treatments in the world. By focusing on changing the flow of energy through our meridians, we can alter the flow of energy in the body to help relieve problems that run deeper than what can be seen on the surface.

Effective for individuals of any age, the process of acupuncture can help release, regulate, and correct the functions of the body through the energy that gives it life.

Sonogram-guided Acupuncture

Using a sonogram to supplement the acupuncture process provides our practitioners an opportunity to see in much clearer detail what is going on beneath the surface, locate the epicenter of your pain, and in turn design an accurate and individualized approach to your acupuncture treatment.

At BOC, our practitioners offer sonogram assessments as a supplementary tool to their acupuncture plans, in order to distinguish whether the underlying cause of pain is muscular or skeletal (or both!). As it can take months to be seen for x-rays and ultrasounds in a clinic, this is a significant advantage. Please do keep in mind that our sonogram assessments are a very convenient tool for less serious injuries that may not require medical imaging, but could benefit from it - they are not intended to replace those needs where required, and we recommend that you follow the suggestions of your family doctor.

e-stim acupuncture

Electro Stimulation Acupuncture (or e-stim acupuncture) combines the benefits of electro stimulation therapy and traditional acupuncture. By attaching electric clips to the top of the acupuncture needles, various currents are used to stimulate the muscles, causing them to contract and relax. It’s an odd feeling - but effective. In particular, conditions such as spasmodic muscle disorders, peripheral nerve disorders, and muscle atrophy have been shown to benefit greatly from e-stim acupuncture. It can even provide relief from anxiety and insomnia!

E-stim works by improving micro circulations, increasing metabolic waste removal, and rejuvenating tissue. Please note, however, that this type of treatment is not suitable for patients who are pregnant, have a pacemaker, or have any current heart conditions.

Cosmetic Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture involves inserting 120 to 150 tiny needles, mainly on face. As the needles puncture the skin, they create wounds within its threshold, which are called positive microtraumas. These positive microtraumas stimulate lymphatic and circulatory system, which work together to deliver nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells, nourishing skin from the inside out. This helps even out the skin complexion and promote glowing skin. The positive microtraumas also stimulates the production of collagen. This helps improve elasticity, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles to get bright, anti-aging results.

If you have had laser or any abrasive facial procedures done, it is best to wait a few weeks to let the skin heal before trying facial acupuncture. Not recommended for diabetics and pregnant women.
